Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a condition characterised by chronic diarrhoea and/or constipation, abdominal cramps and bloating. The cause of this syndrome or collection of symptoms is often unclear and rightly or wrongly is frequently associated with anxiety and stress. As anyone suffering from IBS knows, there is a huge lack of confidence around being able to manage and control the bowel, especially during those important or stressful occasions.

There is perhaps no clearer demonstration of the mind-body link than in IBS, where the unconscious brain can create a powerful physical reaction in the body, unfortunately not one that is necessarily helpful to us.

Although the symptoms of IBS may not always be triggered by our unconscious mind, on many occasions they are and can often result in unhelpful repetitive patterns. Those IBS suffers with a tendency towards diarrhoea know that the simplest, seemingly non stressful activity, such as leaving the house to go shopping, can result in a destructive pattern of frequent visits to the toilet in quick succession. Likewise, those suffering from severe constipation often find themselves sluggish and bloated, unable to perform at their best when they most need to.
